Ian was talking about the drawing power of bands--Tull got a plaque in the clip (Nov '77) for selling out MSG 9 X.
'77 Kiss--on top of the world
'78 Four solo albums tank
'79 "Dynasty" saw shrinking ticket sales, canceled Kiss World theme park, Chris quits
'80 "Unmasked" fewer sales yet & only 1 US gig for the album
'81 "The Elder" sold so poorly Kiss didn't tour it at all
'82 "Ace" Frehley quits
So, given they were on top of the world when Ian said that, I'd say he was rather prescient

KISS were arguably the biggest American rock band of 1977 (others will say The Eagles, Boston, Aerosmith and Ted Nugent were). That same year also saw British acts like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin selling out huge sports arenas and stadiums in the US. Queen and Genesis did their first US arena tours. Tull and Yes continued to fill the arenas in whilst their prog counterparts ELP had the disastrous Works tour with orchestra that nearly killed them.
